“Shades” is Nathan Moody’s darkest, most experimental, and least compromising release to date. Performed live with synthesizers and tape loops, with no formal sequencing, through guitar amplifiers, “Shades” is a dark electronic experimental odyssey like no other.
This work’s oppressive bass and screaming howls evoke sinister forces and a cinematic narrative. There is no timing grid, no sync, only performative structures that are intuitive and impulsive. Only the occasional loop accompanies the live performances that make up the layers of each song. As always, this work resists easy classification: more dynamic and expressive than dark ambient, noisier than drone, more structured and melodic than noise.
This horror movie of an album may unnerve, but its intensity and intricacy invites the listener to complete its underlying story and unusual structures. Adventurous psychonauts will be richly rewarded by this sonic journey.
